In 2008, the University of Iowa Office of the State Archaeologist (OSA) conducted a targeted survey of Whitewater Canyon and Lost Canyon wildlife management Areas for Jones and Dubuque County Conservation Boards, with the support of a grant from the Historic Resources Development Program and the assistance of  a crew of AmeriCorp volunteers. Whitewater Canyon and Lost Canyon are situated at the convergence of Dubuque, Jackson, and Jones counties and contain a striking diversity of ecological, geological and cultural resources. The survey resulted in the identification of 28 newly recorded historic and prehistoric archaeological sites which are the emblematic of more than 2500 years of human use.

OSA Archaeologist Bryan Kendall will cover this topic in a Brown Bag presentation for the Jackson County Historical Society on Tuesday, February 6.
