Together, the Old Capitol Museum and the Museum of Natural History form the UI Pentacrest Museums, the university's doorways to discovery in the heart of downtown Iowa City.
Iowa's original capitol building is now fully restored as a museum. Our permanent and temporary exhibits range from territorial history to the science of corn to contemporary Iowa artists. Marvel at our famous reverse-spiral staircase, enjoy a lecture or educational program in Iowa's original Senate chamber, or hear a concert on our 1878 Steinway concert grand.
We are the oldest university museum west of the Mississippi River, and offer programs, events, and exhibits for visitors of all ages. Discover 500 million years of Iowa history in Iowa Hall, see animals from around the world in Hageboeck Hall of Birds and Mammal Hall, explore the distant Pacific in the historic Laysan Island Cyclorama, and learn about our place in the world's environment in the Biosphere Discovery Hub.
