Pentacrest Museums Family Weekend

Saturday, April 19, 2014 - 3:00am to 12:00pm

 10 a.m. - 5 p.m. Saturday

1-5 p.m. Sunday

Join us for a weekend of fun for for all ages in the Museum of Natural History, Old Capitol Museum, and on the Pentacrest!

Visitors to the Museum of Natural History will learn fun ways they can help save the planet with help from Captain Planet and his Planeteers, from decorating their own reusable canvas bags, to learning about water conservation and fire prevention, how to plant seeds, making fun crafts out of reusable materials, and more.

The Museum of Natural History is also collaborating with Sesame Street Live (coming to Cedar Rapids April 29th and 30th) for a ticket giveaway to participants who stop by the Extinct and Endangered Animal table in Mammal Hall and put their name in the drawing after making their own animal puppet to take home.

The Old Capitol Museum will feature activity tables that give children a chance to make their own musical instruments. The Iowa Flood Center will also be on hand to provide an interactive demo on watersheds and flooding from 1-5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.  Using a watershed model table complete with movable trees, cars, homes, and a river that really rises, IFC staff will demonstrate what a watershed is, and how changes in the watershed can make a difference in how the river responds to rainfall. Children are able to learn about what causes flooding, how to be prepared, and how to make decisions about safety.
